"They was either born that way or they came out of the eggshell backwards"...
Such is the description of the white
frizzle
chicken whose feathers seem to curl up and point the wrong way! - From "The Story of the
Frizzle
Chicken" by Mildred Huie.
According to folklore - then as now -
Frizzlies
are always kept in rural Georgia yards to scratch up the hex or conjure that might be placed there by an enemy. Almost anything can be used for the hex, provided it's been conjured by the witch doctor: the hair of a black cat, a feather from a blue bird, a button from your best satin dress. The hex is often buried in your yard. But if you have a
frizzle
chicken, it can scratch up the conjure and ward off evil spirits.
Frizzlies
have long fascinated Mildred Nix Huie, and her genre opaintings of rural island scenes have kept alive the spirit and folklore of the
. A special collection of
Frizzlies
is on permanent display at Left Bank Art Gallery and also at the Mediterranean House on St. Simons Island.
